Chocolate is one of the world’s oldest indulgences, with a history that spans over 4,000 years. When paired with a great movie, chocolate tastes even better, something known all too well to fans of Timothée Chalamet, who donned the hat of the titular chocolatier in 2023’s Wonka. Based on the classic Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka scored huge success three years ago, earning over $630 million at the global box office.

Not only is Wonka still a hit on streaming, but Netflix has recently announced its new reality competition series, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, in commemoration of the 55th anniversary of 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. From the world’s most famous fictional chocolate brand to one of the most popular real ones, it was announced this week that BritBox will be bringing to life a six-part drama based on the origin story of Cadbury as they craft the world-famous chocolate bar and change the world in the process.

Previously announced under the working title of Chocolate Wars, and inspired by Deborah Cadbury’s book of the same name, The Cadburys has landed a selection box of talented acting treats, including Harry Gilby (Boarders) as George Cadbury, Toby Regbo (Outrageous) as Richard Cadbury, Jessica Barden (Dune: Prophecy) as Maria Cadbury, Pearce Quigley (The Gentlemen) as John Cadbury, Ben Hardy (The Conjuring: Last Rites) as Francis Fry, Joanna Scanlan (Riot Women) and Poppy Gilbert (The Other Bennett Sister) as Elizabeth Adlington. The series will also star the likes of Felicity Montagu, Mathew Baynton, Adam Hashmi, William Singh, Oli Green, and Alexander Butler, as well as the burgeoning talents of tomorrow: Leah Swain-Heath, Maisie Britton, and Emma Montrochet.

Charlie Bucket Himself Is Even Involved in ‘The Cadburys’

If there wasn’t enough talent already involved in The Cadburys, which is currently in production in Birmingham, one of the most famous faces of chocolate in cinema is executive producing the project. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star Freddie Highmore is the man in question, who 21 years ago took on the role of poor Charlie Bucket as he won the chance of a lifetime to visit the titular factory courtesy of a golden ticket. Highmore starred in Tim Burton‘s offbeat interpretation, opposite Johnny Depp as the enigmatic chocolatier.

BritBox‘s latest project, The Cadburys, is currently in production in Birmingham.
