‘Star Trek’: Writers Reveal First Official Details For New Movie!!

The future is an undiscovered country for fans of Star Trek these days. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has begun its last full-length season, with a final, truncated season yet to air, while the franchise’s newest series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, will end with its second season. Meanwhile, on the big screen, the franchise hasn’t made it to the multiplex since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, which just celebrated its tenth birthday.

However, there may be hope on the horizon, as Game Night‘s Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are working on a new big-screen version of the long-running science fiction franchise. Collider‘s Steve Weintraub hosted the duo on a panel of directors at San Diego Comic Con this evening, and Samantha Coley was there to report on all the new details.

The duo says that the script is in progress; they’re very excited about it, and they think people will be surprised by it. In a first for Star Trek, the movie will center around a group of all-new characters; previous Star Trek films have either reunited the casts of Star Trek: The Original Series or The Next Generation, or, in the case of the recent trilogy of “Kelvin Timeline” films, recast a new crop of actors as the iconic Original Series crew. It’s set “further in the future than we’ve been before,” which may indicate a break with the stories of the past; it could mean it’s moving beyond The Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era of the 24th century, or even farther, past the 32nd century of Discovery and Starfleet Academy. Most importantly, however, the duo insist that the film will satisfy the fans, but also create new ones.

Who Are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein?

Daley began his career as an actor, with roles on Freaks and Geeks and Bones; Goldstein was a lawyer before switching to a writing career. The duo made their writing debut with the comedy film Horrible Bosses. After penning scripts for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Spider-Man: Homecoming, they made their directorial debut with Vacation, a legacy sequel to the classic comedy franchise. They subsequently made a splash with the caper comedy Game Night and the acclaimed fantasy actioner Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Next up, the duo are directing Mayday, a Cold War action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh; it will debut on Apple TV on September 4.
