Few action franchises hit harder that Netflix‘s Extraction, which emerged during the pandemic as a surprise hit that very soon turned into a streaming juggernaut. Since Chris Hemsworth first stepped into the role of black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake in 2020, the series has become one of the streamer’s biggest original success stories, spawning a blockbuster sequel and plans for an expanding shared universe and now, the next chapter is finally underway.
Production has officially begun on Extraction 3, with director Sam Hargrave confirming the start of filming by sharing the first behind-the-scenes image from the set. The photo reunites Hargrave with Hemsworth and returning co-star Idris Elba, who made his franchise debut in Extraction 2. Hemsworth also recently revealed that cameras were set to roll this summer, teasing that Tyler Rake’s next mission would begin “in a couple of weeks.”
Tyler Rake Returns Following Netflix’s Biggest Action Franchise
Directed once again by Hargrave and produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, Extraction 3 is the nest installment in one of Netflix‘s most popular series. The original film became one of the streamer’s most-watched movies following its 2020 debut, while 2023’s Extraction 2 proved an even bigger critical success, improving its Rotten Tomatoes score from 67% to 79%.
Obviously we don’t know any details about the story but we could make an educated guess that it’ll send Tyler Rake on another globe-trotting mission full of bone crunching action, immense choreography, stunning one-shot scenes and another A-list cameo or two. Previous reports have indicated filming will take place across India, Thailand, Prague and Australia.
The franchise is also continuing to grow beyond the main films, too, and Netflix is developing Mercenary, a spin-off series starring Omar Sy that follows a hostage rescue mission in Libya, while Ma Dong-seok (Eternals) is set to headline another feature spin-off, Tygo, centred on a former child soldier seeking revenge against Korea’s criminal underworld.
