Star Trek: Starfleet Academy may be closing its doors after its second season, but admission is still open. The series will be adding a new cast member in its second season, as was revealed by Karim Diané during the Star Trek panel in Hall H during San Diego Comic Con this afternoon. Collider‘s Samantha Coley was in attendance.

Diané, who plays Klingon cadet Jay-Den Kragg on the series, was joined by fellow Starfleet Academy castmate Robert Picardo (The Doctor) on the panel. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, which first premiered on TV in 1966, a galaxy of Trek stars were on hand, including Michael Dorn (Worf on The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Picard), Dominic Keating (Malcolm Reed on Enterprise), Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko on Deep Space Nine), Doug Jones (Saru on Discovery), Michelle Hurd (Raffi Musiker on Picard), Jerry O’Connell (Jack Ransom on Lower Decks), Christina Chong (La’An Noonien-Singh on Strange New Worlds), and George Takei (Hikaru Sulu on The Original Series).

The new cast member of Starfleet Academy is British actor Ruaridh Aldington (Drained). He’ll play Keats, a young alien who our cadets meet during an away mission. He’s got a mysterious past, but the cadets bring him back to the Academy in the spirit of friendship. Once they return, however, they learn that he’s a wanted man, and some very dangerous people will stop at nothing to get him in their clutches. The panel also revealed the first image from season 2.

What Is ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ About?

Taking place in the wake of The Burn, a galaxy-spanning disaster that shattered the Federation, Starfleet Academy sees the titular institution of learning open its doors once again. Now under the command of Chancellor Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), the Academy is educating the next generation of Starfleet officers with an eclectic collection of faculty members. One student in particular, Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), is a project of Ake’s, an attempt to make up for a mistake she made years ago. But a looming figure from both of their pasts, the ruthless Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti), is determined to destroy them both, and the Academy with them.

Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now in post-production.
