For the first time in five years, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is returning to feature film writing after spending nearly a decade building one of television’s most successful franchises. During that time, Sheridan transformed Yellowstone into the phenomenon it is today by expanding the franchise to include hit prequels 1883 and 1923, and it continues to grow with spin-offs like Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Beyond Yellowstone, he also created some of Paramount+‘s biggest original dramas, including Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman.

Sheridan‘s return to film follows the conclusion of the flagship Yellowstone series, which ended in late 2024 after five seasons. His most recent screenwriting credits were the 2021 thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead, starring Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, Jon Bernthal, Medina Senghore, Aidan Gillen, and Yellowstone actor Finn Little, and Tom Clancy‘s Without Remorse, led by Michael B. Jordan. Both films were released while Yellowstone was at the height of its popularity.

Now, Sheridan‘s Bosque Ranch Productions banner, alongside 101 Studios, the studio behind Yellowstone and many of his television projects, announced yesterday that they have acquired the rights to two gripping titles. From The Brutalist producer Andrew Lauren, the films have been in development for years and were first conceived long before Yellowstone became a global phenomenon. The films are original concepts by Lauren, written by Sheridan, and will be produced by Bosque Ranch Productions, 101 Studios, and Lauren himself.

What’s Next for Taylor Sheridan?

Titled Visalia and Capture the Flag, the two films do not yet have release dates. But in the meantime, we have details about what’s to come. In Visalia, we see a determined young Cuban woman who escapes the only life she has ever known, risking everything as she crosses dangerous waters in pursuit of freedom in America. But after a historic political shift draws her back to Cuba, she must confront the uncertain promises of a transformed homeland and the personal cost of everything she sacrificed to survive.

Capture the Flag, on the other hand, centers on a brilliant NASA engineer racing to build the first reusable spacecraft capable of traveling to the Moon and back. When a powerful tech billionaire offers him the opportunity to make history, he is forced to navigate increasingly difficult moral compromises as ambition, loyalty, and ethics collide. Speaking about the projects, Lauren said:

I worked on developing them with Taylor long before his emergence as one of the industry’s most distinctive, visionary voices. It’s incredibly rewarding to see his continued passion and commitment to bringing these stories to the screen.”
