‘Waller’ & ‘Paradise Lost’ Series Are Officially Dead at DC!!

It seems the DC Universe, for the moment, is contracting. After last month’s revelation that Booster Gold, the comedy superhero series being developed by Our Flag Means Death‘s David Jenkins, was not going forward at the studio, two more in-development series have joined it in the back-issue bins, permanently.

When James Gunn ascended to the role of the new DC Comics cinematic universe, his arrival was heralded with an ambitious slate of projects designed to take on cross-town rival Marvel‘s ever-expanding MCU. That slate, dubbed “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” has already had some ups and downs; Superman and Creature Commandos were released to good notices and receptive audiences, but this summer’s Supergirl failed to launch. Other projects, including a film based on the antiheroic super-team The Authority, seem to have stalled indefinitely, while others, like the Batman-focused The Brave and the Bold, have yet to materialize.

As reported by Variety, Waller and Paradise Lost are no longer in development at DC Studios. Waller was to star Viola Davis‘ Amanda Waller, a shadowy government operative who keeps a tight rein on the world’s superhumans. First introduced in 2016’s Suicide Squad, which was part of the now-defunct DC Extended Universe, Davis’ Waller survived the transition to a new cinematic universe, appearing in Peacemaker and Creature Commandos. Paradise Lost was to have centered around Themyscira, also known as Paradise Island, the home island of Wonder Woman and her people, the Amazons; it would have been a precursor to an eventual Wonder Woman movie. Neither series had been given the official green-light.

What’s Next For the DCU?

The DCU‘s next entry hits screens this weekend, as Lanterns debuts on HBO; a tale of the spacefaring law enforcement organization, the Green Lantern Corps, Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. On the big screen, the horror flick Clayface oozes on to the big screen this fall; it stars Tom Rhys Harries as the malleable Batman foe. Next year, Superman (David Corenswet) has to team with archfoe Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) to face the menace of Brainiac (Lars Eidinger) in Man of Tomorrow. Beyond that, the outlook is hazier; there is a new season of Creature Commandos in development, as well as a Mister Miracle animated series and a live-action comedy, American Villain, that will pair Superman‘s Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) with pernicious primate Gorilla Grodd (Jimmy Tatro). Films based on Wonder Woman, Teen Titans, and the villainous duo of Bane and Deathstroke are also in the works.
