Topping the charts for the third weekend in a row, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now among the five highest-grossing films in domestic box-office history and the eighth highest-grossing hit on the all-time global list. The superhero tentpole demolished Avengers: Endgame‘s domestic opening-weekend record, grossing a mammoth $360 million. It also surpassed the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide in its first week of release, thanks to near-unanimous praise from critics and audiences. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie brings back star Tom Holland as the friendly neighborhood superhero for the fourth time in a solo movie. Holland previously played the character in a trilogy of hits directed by Jon Watts.
Each of those movies outgrossed their predecessors by a significant amount, with Spider-Man: No Way Home delivering a $1.9 billion haul globally in 2021. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now overtaken that blockbuster at the worldwide box office after fewer than 20 days of release. Also featuring Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Sadie Sink, the movie received excellent reviews and is now sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 89% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “Spinning a web of spectacular set pieces together with mature emotional stakes and Tom Holland’s soulful performance, Brand New Day is a promising reset that portends Spidey will remain sticky on the big screen for years to come.”
