The last few years have been huge for Stephen King fans, who have been treated to several exciting adaptations of some of his most famous novels. The first that comes to mind from 2025 is The Long Walk, which earned widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences on its way to also earning over $60 million at the box office. The film stars Cooper Hoffman opposite David Jonsson, who has also been cast as the next Black Panther in the MCU. King returned to the big screen at the end of the year with the second adaptation of one of his most famous books, The Running Man, starring Glen Powell. The film bombed at the box office before going on to become one of the biggest streaming hits of the year on Paramount Plus.
Fans could argue for years about which of King’s novels is the most famous, but one that would certainly get a lot of votes is IT, which follows the terrifying clown, Pennywise. There have been several IT adaptations over the years, but the most recent is an HBO series written by Andy Muschietti, who also recently directed The Flash movie streaming on HBO Max. After the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry was a massive success on HBO at the end of 2025, the streamer made a big decision this afternoon about the future of the series. HBO confirmed that IT: Welcome to Derry has been officially renewed for Season 2. The first season of the show earned an 80% from critics and 82% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes to pair with strong viewership. No word yet on when Season 2 will be released, but it’s expected to air in 2027.
What Is ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 About?
HBO released an official synopsis for IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2, which reads as follows: “Set in the world of Stephen King’s “IT” universe, It: Welcome to Derry is based on King’s “IT” novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films IT and IT Chapter Two. Season two takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.” The hit HBO horror series returns Bill Skarsgård to his signature role as Pennywise the Clown.
