‘God of War’: Prime Video Officially Casts Dave Bautista in Kratos Role!!

Prime Video’s God of War has not had its troubles to seek since production began in earnest earlier this year. The show has already undergone the sort of change that would be seismic for any television series, never mind one based around one of gaming’s most recognisable characters. Production on Amazon’s ambitious adaptation began earlier this year, with Ryan Hurst stepping into the enormous boots of Kratos and the series already four months into filming. Unfortunately, a serious injury forced Hurst to leave the project, leaving Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television needing a new God of War. They’ve found a pretty formidable one.

Dave Bautista has officially closed his deal to play Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War, replacing Hurst as the lead of the live-action PlayStation adaptation. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television reportedly approached the WWE Hall of Famer shortly after deciding that the role needed to be recast.

Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt in late June, four months into the Vancouver shoot. The production will now essentially start again from scratch, with footage filmed during Hurst’s time as Kratos not expected to be used. Preparation for the restarted production begins this month ahead of filming resuming in Vancouver in mid-October. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun), who directed the original first two episodes, will return to direct those episodes again with Bautista.

Bautista doesn’t have much time to prepare physically for what will inevitably be a demanding role, but he’s a pretty huge dude as it is, and he’s also coming off Highlander with Henry Cavill, for which he bulked up pretty impressively to play the Kurrgan.

The series also stars Callum Vinson (Chucky) as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) as Odin, Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Baldur, Max Parker (Boots) as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance) as Thor, Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge) as Sif, Sonya Walger (Lost) as Freya, Alastair Duncan (The Batman) as Mimir and Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld) as Brok. Developed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), the series will closely follow the story introduced in 2018’s God of War and continued in God of War Ragnarök.
