Netflix has had a wildly successful year so far in 2026, enlisting some big-time stars to headline some of the biggest movies and TV shows on streaming. The most-watched project of the year on Netflix has been War Machine, the new sci-fi thriller starring Alan Ritchson. After the film collected nearly 140 million views during its first 90 days on streaming, it officially broke into the all-time top 10 Netflix watchlists, and the streamer has already confirmed that a sequel to the film is in the works. A few months before War Machine was tearing up Netflix viewership charts, the streaming service unleashed its gritty, Miami-set crime thriller, The Rip. The film stars Matt Damon opposite Ben Affleck, and while it didn’t earn as many views as War Machine, it still did well enough to earn a spot on the list of the top 10 biggest movies of 2026.
Like any good streaming service, though, Netflix is always on the hunt for its next big hit. This afternoon, Netflix announced it’s now in early development on a new spy thriller series, Bannerman, which was co-written by Shane Black and Craig Silverstein, who also serves as showrunner. Made in collaboration with AMC, the show will premiere on the network in the US and Canada and begin streaming on Netflix 90 days later. Bannerman marks the first series jointly developed and distributed by Netflix and AMC. Casting for the show, as well as a potential release window, has not yet been announced. The official logline for the series, which is based on the critically acclaimed, bestselling spy novels by John R. Maxim, has also been released; heads up John Wick fans, it’s the perfect replacement for those missing Keanu Reeves‘ hit action franchise:
“Paul Bannerman, a lethal covert operative, convinces a group of the world’s most deadly assassins to quit the spy game for a chance to lead normal lives in the suburbs of Connecticut. Old enemies, bad habits, a paranoid government and an unrelenting ex-cop will make retirement their most difficult mission yet.”
