Just over a month into its theatrical run, Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is continuing to defy expectations at the box office. The movie delivered the biggest opening-weekend haul of the Oscar-winning director’s career, and subsequently became his third film to gross more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The Odyssey has now overtaken The Dark Knight to become Nolan’s top-grossing movie at the domestic box office, and in doing so, has broken into an elite all-time list. The Dark Knight was hailed as an industry-altering hit back in 2008, introducing audiences to a new kind of blockbuster that was aped by virtually every studio for years to come. The film’s apparent snub at the Oscars is generally seen as the main reason the Academy expanded the Best Picture nominees the following year.

Considered one of the greatest crime movies of all time, and certainly among the best superhero films ever made, The Dark Knight grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and nearly $535 million domestically. Produced on a reported budget of $185 million, the film served as a sequel to Nolan‘s Batman Begins, and was followed by The Dark Knight Rises, which ended the epic trilogy with a billion-dollar haul as well. The Dark Knight now holds a “Certified Fresh” 94% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Dark, complex, and unforgettable, The Dark Knight succeeds not just as an entertaining comic book film, but as a richly thrilling crime saga.”

Here’s How Much ‘The Odyssey’ Has Grossed at the Box Office

Interestingly, The Odyssey is also sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and will likely become Nolan‘s third movie to compete in major categories at the Oscars after Oppenheimer and Dunkirk. This past weekend, the film grossed $19 million at the domestic box office, pushing its running total to $540 million. This makes The Odyssey the 20th highest-grossing movie in domestic box-office history.

Globally, the epic is about to pass the $1.5 billion mark, having cemented itself among the 20 highest-grossing films of all time on this list as well. With weeks of sold-out IMAX 70mm screenings ahead of it, the movie will likely continue grossing at least $1 million daily for the foreseeable future, with a strong chance of eventually hitting the $600 million milestone domestically.
