Apple TV is slowly building its reputation as more than a destination for sci-fi and crime thrillers. Since it debuted in 2019, the streaming service has invested in high-quality comedy shows to give subscribers variety. Early comedy offerings include Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s Mr. Corman, Jason Sudeikis-led Ted Lasso, and Rob Mac‘s Mythic Quest. The streamer has continued to grow its library with hits like Trying, Shrinking, and Widow’s Bay, but it is always on the lookout for the next major hit, and it has found it in a perfect comedy series.
This show doesn’t premiere on the streamer until next month, but Apple TV is confident it’s a hit. Critical response has been positive, with the comedy series already sporting a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience sentiment is also overwhelmingly positive, as shown by the 94% score on the same site. Deadline reports that the series titled Small Prophets has earned an early Season 2 renewal ahead of its Apple TV debut on October 7.
Part of the early renewal is because Small Prophets has already been tested with a different audience, and it was a hit. The BBC originally produced the series, and the UK audience has already delivered its verdict. It drew 9.2 million viewers. Apple TV acquired the show in August for the global audience, excluding its home country, where it will be available next year. Small Prophets has been praised for having that warm feeling that has made shows like Ted Lasso and Shrinking bona fide hits.
What Is ‘Small Prophets’ About?
The series takes place around Manchester and follows Michael Sleep (Pearce Quigley), who has lived a mundane life since his darling Clea disappeared seven years ago. With his eccentricities, Michael works in a DIY store, visits his dad Brian (Michael Palin), and lives with the hope that Clea will return. One day, his dad shares an old recipe involving rainwater, horse manure, and more than a little alchemy for creating homunculi. These magical spirits can predict the future, and Michael wants to know whether he’ll ever see Clea again. Despite his skepticism, Michael sets out on the task with help from his young coworker, Kacey (Lauren Patel). Their unlikely friendship grows stronger as they both dislike their manager, Gordon, played by series creator Mackenzie Crook. Meanwhile, Michael’s neighbors, Bev (Sophie Wilan) and Clive (Jon Pointing), become intrigued by what is going on in his shed.
The six-episode first season of Small Prophets debuts on Apple TV on October 7.
