Less than two months after Galadriel’s (Morfydd Clark) long-lost husband and Elf lord, Celeborn, was confirmed to appear in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, another even more exciting plot detail has come to light. The new season takes place five years after the catastrophic events of Season 2, during the height of the War of the Elves and the Dark Lord. Unlike previous seasons, it is expected to premiere with its first four episodes in two months, on November 11, 2026, followed by two more episodes on November 18 and the final two on November 25.
With the new season of The Lord of the Rings hit series comes another long-lost character whose historical legacy plays a pivotal role throughout the fantasy franchise. While Elrond has played an active, prominent role in the main stories, his twin brother Elros doesn’t get as much attention. Elros, half-elven like Elrond but who chose mortal life over immortality, founded the island kingdom of Númenor, ruling as its first king and thereby establishing the royal lineage of Men. The character is completely absent from Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, besides indirect mentions of the ancient kings of Númenor.
The Rings of Power initially referenced Elros only in the background via a tapestry back in Season 1. However, Polygon exclusively reports that the upcoming Season 3 will officially introduce him, with actor Robert Aramayo pulling double duty portraying both Elrond and Elros. The outlet also revealed a first-look image of the long-lost twin who appears in a flashback telling Elrond that he has chosen mortality. The scene takes place before present-day Elrond travels to Númenor to seek help in the war against Sauron.
Another Long-Lost Character Appears in ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3
Elros passed away thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, making his introduction in The Rings of Power important for showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay after Elrond’s send-off to Númenor. At this stage, Sauron is already recruiting men to become Nazgûl but has not yet forged the One Ring; so, the flashback appears as a memory Elrond recalls as he considers his upcoming mission.
According to Payne, Elrond has always felt deep sorrow over losing his closest kin; hence, visiting Númenor allows him to metaphorically “walk a mile in his brother’s shoes” and see another part of his brother. There, he witnesses the civilization that grew from a dream Elros once shared with him quietly in the woods.
The Rings of Power returns in November.
