Miami Vice fans have a new reason to celebrate and revisit Michael Mann‘s iconic film. Mann has secretly been working on a recut of the film, titled Miami Vice: Director’s Final Cut. However, there’s a catch to the release that could leave fans disappointed.
Currently, the film is scheduled only for a Beyond Fest premiere. No additional information has been released as of now for a wider theatrical release or whether the film will be available to watch on streaming or other digital media.
The Miami Vice story follows two undercover cops into a dangerous world of crime
The principal story of Miami Vice follows two Miami-Dade detectives, played by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Farrell plays Sonny Crockett, while Foxx plays Ricardo Tubbs. The detectives work undercover in the vice unit while balancing their personal lives with their undercover identities.
The inciting incident of the story sees an FBI op go sideways, which results in the death of several agents. Tubbs and Crockett are brought in to salvage the operation. The FBI hopes the detectives’ unique skills can help salvage the operation after its informant is compromised.
The film is an adaptation of Mann’s own television series of the same name. Foxx pitched the idea of a film based on the series while Mann was working on Will Smith’s Ali. The cast also included a slew of talented actors, such as Gong Li, Naomie Harris, Justin Theroux, Ciarán Hinds, and Barry Shabaka Henley.
While the film struggled to garner commercial or critical acclaim, it has since developed a cult following, as Mann’s films often do. The release of a director’s cut is sure to have critics interested in what a new cut of the film might have to offer.
