Based on the children’s novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the new Western series Little House on the Prairie — not to be confused with the original series that ran between 1974 and 1983 — is an undeniable hit for Netflix as the streamer continues to add Western titles to its catalog. Earning 6.4 million views in just four days and called a “masterpiece” in Maggie Lovitt‘s review for Collider, Little House on the Prairie has set the standard for Western adaptations on Netflix.

“Little House on the Prairie is sure to be an instant hit for Netflix, and with any luck, it will live on for many more seasons, just as the original series did,” Lovitt added in her review, with the show greenlit for a second season many months before the first premiered. Following in the footsteps of Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone universe, Netflix is hoping to find its own long-running Western streaming juggernaut. But the streamer isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket, with it now confirmed that another ambitious Western adaptation is on the way on the platform.

After the rights were acquired by independent studio Teton Ridge Entertainment in February, the iconic Western novel Lonesome Dove is getting a flashy modern adaptation that will officially come to Netflix. Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is now in the hands of Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart, who are currently putting the final pieces together on their co-showrun upcoming Netflix project, East of Eden. The story of Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call’s final cattle drive as they chase their last dream is sure to be a hit for Netflix, with Kazan and Stuart commenting:

“After our singular experience on East of Eden, we are thrilled to be teaming with Netflix again, along with Teton Ridge Entertainment, to bring Larry McMurtry’s western classic to life. We come to this material with love and respect, and can’t wait to hit the trail with Gus and Call and the rest of these beloved characters. Yee-haw.”

An ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Favorite Stars in ‘East of Eden’

Before Kazan and Stuart bring Lonesome Dove to life on Netflix, they are delivering one of the most exciting new titles of the next month, East of Eden. An ambitious adaptation of John Steinbeck‘s sprawling American epic, the seven-episode East of Eden stars the ever-brilliant Florence Pugh (Avengers: Doomsday) as Cathy Ames and also features the likes of Christopher Abbott (Wolf Man) as Adam Trask, Joseph Zada (We Were Liars) as Caleb Trask, Joe Anders (Cape Fear) as Aron Trask, and Mike Faist (Challengers) as Adam’s half-brother Charles.
