Netflix is partnering with Sega to bring a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog TV show to life. The streaming giant is also working with the publisher to adapt more video game titles, such as Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven.

Netflix and Sega are developing a new animated series based on the iconic blue speedster, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Carlos Stevens and Sega head producer Toru Nakahara are currently developing the project. However, the streamer has not unveiled an official release date or any plot details surrounding the new series.

This comes after the franchise’s box-office success, with a worldwide gross of over $1.19 billion across its three films.

“With Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven, we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences,” said Brandon Riegg, vice president of nonfiction and transmedia at Netflix.

How many Sonic the Hedgehog movies have there been so far?

There have been three Sonic the Hedgehog movies so far. Distributed by Paramount Pictures, the first movie came out in 2020 and became a huge hit. That paved the way for further big-screen installments.

The second film was released in April 2022, followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December 2024. Paramount Pictures has distributed the films since 2020, and the trilogy has become one of the distributor’s most reliable family hits. The company also released a spin-off series titled Knuckles in 2024, covering events between the second and third installments.

Ben Schwartz voices the titular character, with Jim Carrey playing Dr. Robotnik across the trilogy. A fourth film, titled Sonic the Hedgehog 4, is currently in development and set to release in March 2027.

The Sonic TV show is part of a larger multi-title deal, and Netflix is also adapting Sega’s Crazy Taxi into a feature film and a live-action crime film based on RGG Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven.
