Netflix is developing a new video game movie with Sega. The project is part of a broader collaboration between the companies, involving multiple adaptations. The upcoming film will also feature the writers behind The Naked Gun reboot.
The adaptation is based on Crazy Taxi, Sega’s popular arcade game. Netflix has confirmed that Dan Gregor and Doug Mand will write the screenplay, while Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Sega’s Toru Nakahara will produce. The companies have not announced the cast, director, or release date yet.
Netflix’s growing bet on video game franchises continues
Crazy Taxi made its debut in 1999 and quickly became one of Sega’s most popular arcade driving games. Players take on the role of taxi drivers who must pick up passengers and deliver them to their destinations before the clock runs out. The game became known for its chaotic driving, shortcuts, and exaggerated arcade gameplay.
Gregor and Mand’s involvement brings a comedic connection to the project. The pair wrote The Naked Gun (2025), which stars Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. Producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher also worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog films, another successful Sega adaptation. As of this writing, Netflix has not revealed the movie’s storyline.
The Crazy Taxi movie is part of a wider Netflix-Sega collaboration. The companies are also developing a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series for an upper preschool audience. Another project in development is a live-action film based on Stranger Than Heaven, the upcoming game from Sega’s RGG Studio.
Netflix has increasingly turned to established video game franchises for films and series. The streamer is developing projects based on franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Gears of War, Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, and Clash of Clans. It is also working on new seasons of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and Devil May Cry.
For now, Crazy Taxi remains in the early stages of development. Netflix and Sega have not announced when production will begin or when the movie will be released.
