After the great success that Netflix has had with video game adaptations like Castlevania and Devil May Cry, the streamer is going to try its hand at adapting another one as a live-action film. Sega’s upcoming 2027 action video game has already been slated for an adaptation with the streamer.
RGG Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven is one of the video game IPs that Netflix is currently developing an adaptation for as part of its multi-million-dollar deal with Sega. It is currently scheduled for a January 15, 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Other projects include a Crazy Taxi feature, along with a fresh Sonic the Hedgehog animated series.
Stranger Than Heaven’s move to Netflix is only part of the story
Stranger Than Heaven is an upcoming game that is set in 20th-century Japan, following the character of Makoto Daito. The game also depicts the origins and the rise of the Tojo Clan, the Yakuza organization that features in the Like a Dragon franchise. Toru Nakahara, head producer at Sega, will be producing the film for the game maker.
Nakahara will actually have his hands full with adaptations, given that he will also be producing the Crazy Taxi feature film that is also in the works. The film is currently being developed for Netflix by The Naked Gun alums Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film are also part of the team of producers behind the film. The premise of the game puts players in the driver’s seat as a bold cabbie who is ready to do what it takes to get his customers across the chaotic city streets.
Another project from Sega that is currently being developed by Netflix is a Sonic the Hedgehog animated series. The project is being developed by Carlos Stevens and Nakahara.
