Antonio Banderas has opened up about whether he will return in Shrek 5. The actor, who voiced Puss in Boots in the franchise, has yet to be confirmed to reprise the role in the upcoming installment.
Etalk recently asked Banderas if fans can expect to see him as Puss in Boots in Shrek 5. In response, the actor shared, “I don’t know actually if I’m going to.”
It was previously rumored that Banderas would not return for the upcoming movie. Since his latest statement did not completely rule out the possibility, fans remain hopeful to see Puss in Boots in action once again.
What Banderas said about his long history with the beloved character
Banderas went on to reflect on his decades-long history voicing Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise.
“I’ve played Puss for five movies, and since 2003,” Banderas shared. “You know, I mean, those movies take a long time just to… to make.”
The Oscar-nominated star continued, “And I do the character in English. I do the character also in Spanish and in Italian. And two versions in Spanish, because, you know, I do versions for Mexico, Argentina, some country in South America, and then the version for Spain.”
Banderas concluded, “It has been a paradox, actually, because I’ve arrived in America without speaking the language, and one of my most celebrated characters uses only my voice. And so it’s just… yeah. Something very strange in my life, but very, very fun.”
Shrek 5 is the upcoming fifth main installment in the Shrek film series and a sequel to Shrek Forever After (2010). Mike Myers will reprise his role as the titular ogre, along with Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. The star-studded cast also includes Zendaya, Skyler Gisondo, Marcello Hernández, and Conrad Vernon.
The movie will follow Shrek, Princess Fiona, their children, and Donkey as they embark on new adventures in a city called “Further Further Away.”
Distributed by Universal Pictures, Shrek 5 will hit theaters on June 30, 2027.
