Famously, Jon Snow knows nothing. But we think that’s slightly unfair. He does know a thing or two about coming back from the dead, so maybe we shouldn’t write the obituary on his proposed Game of Thrones sequel quite so quickly. The King in the North’s story appeared to be over when plans for a follow-up were shelved but it sounds like things might have thawed over north of the Wall.

Kit Harington (Industry) has confirmed that he still believes there’s a version of his proposed Jon Snow sequel that could work, admitting that he’s now “more comfortable” with the character and the world of Game of Thrones than he was when the project was abandoned. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington explained that the series spent around two years in development before he ultimately decided the story wasn’t strong enough to justify bringing Jon back.

“We developed it two years or so. I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t. But I was very insistent at the start — as was HBO and George R.R. Martin — of like: ‘If we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much better if we don’t.’ After a little while of thinking about it — it kind of was me — [I said], ‘This isn’t quite the right [story].’”

Crucially, Harington doesn’t seem to view that decision as permanently closing the door. Time away from Jon, and the opportunity to play considerably different characters, has changed his relationship with the role:

“[But] now I’ve gone and done all these other things and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life.”

What Is Kit Harington Making Next?

Harington doesn’t need Game of Thrones to get him back onto HBO. He’s already joining another of the network’s biggest fantasy properties after being cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of Harry Potter. Lockhart is the pompous, vain and intensely unqualified new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, whose confidence in his own abilities is matched only by his enthusiasm for reminding everybody else how brilliant he is.

“Lockhart is addicted to himself. It’s just a tiny step to my left [for me].”

Harington previously voiced Lockhart in the full-cast audio editions of the Harry Potter novels, and revealed that listening to the audiobooks became an important part of his nightly routine after he stopped drinking alcohol.

“My brain is incredibly busy, especially at night, and I’ve always found going to bed very difficult like and my brain doesn’t turn off. When I got sober that got especially bad. So I started listening to Harry Potter audio books, and now they’re the thing I listen to every night.”

Game of Thrones is streaming on HBO Max, while Harington will appear as Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter Season 2.
