Hugh Laurie is no stranger to playing complex individuals for our enjoyment on television, but this time, his newest part is putting him on the wrong side of the law. The House and The Night Manager star is leading The Wanted Man, a new Apple TV crime drama that will see him playing an organized crime boss who suddenly finds himself behind bars and it’s fair to say from the first look at this one, prison isn’t treating him too kindly.
Apple TV has officially confirmed that The Wanted Man will premiere globally on January 6, 2027, launching with its first two episodes before moving to a weekly Wednesday release schedule. The eight-episode season will conclude on February 17. The series comes from George Kay, the creator of Apple TV’s Hijack, who serves as creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer. It’s the latest thriller from Apple, who continue their current run of bringing some of the finest prestige television to us in all genres, not just crime. As for the plot, well, it’s a tasty sounding one, that’s for sure.
When organized crime boss Felix Carmichael (Laurie) is betrayed by someone inside his own firm and sent to the notorious Staplehurst Prison, he’s forced to remember his own brutality to fight for survival. With his family, firm and fortune at stake, Felix resolves to do the unthinkable: escape.
Laurie is joined by a seriously stacked cast. Thandiwe Newton (Westworld) stars alongside Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), Gina McKee (My Policeman), Hazel Doupe (Say Nothing), Elliott Heffernan (Blitz) and Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones).
What Can We Expect From ‘The Wanted Man’?
The newly released images offer the first proper glimpse at Laurie’s Felix at several points in the story, including looking considerably worse for wear inside prison. We also see Whitehead in full tactical gear beside a burning vehicle, while the first looks at Newton and McKee suggest there will be plenty happening outside Staplehurst while Felix attempts to survive inside.
Kay executive produces the series alongside Willow Grylls and Matt Sandford, while David Meanti serves as series producer. Emmy-nominated filmmaker Jakob Verbruggen, whose previous credits include The Fall, London Spy and Dark Matter, directs the series.
The Wanted Man premieres with two episodes on Apple TV on January 6, 2027, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through February 17.
