‘Treasure Island’ Trailer Has David Oyelowo & Hayley Atwell Set Sail In New MGM+ Series!! Check It Out!!

Prepare to set sail, landlubbers. You’re on a course for Treasure Island, starring David Oyelowo as Long John Silver, the most famous fictional pirate in literature. The new TV miniseries adaptation is venturing into the waters of MGM+ next month, but gaze into the spyglass for a new look at the show’s new trailer.

Written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1881, Treasure Island set the standards for all tales of high-seas piracy to come. Long John Silver is the source of many of what we now consider pirate traditions, from his peg leg to his chatty pet parrot. Robert Newton, who played the silver screen’s most famous Long John Silver in Disney‘s 1950 adaptation of the novel, exaggerated his native West Country accent, which has now become codified as the “pirate accent.” Oyelowo recently spoke to Collider about being the first Black actor to play the iconic pirate, despite many historical pirates being of African descent: “I love the fact that even though Robert Louis Stevenson didn’t put that in the book, this version of it acknowledges that truth. And, you know, I also get to sort of have one leg and a parrot, so what’s not to like about that.”

In the new trailer, we see Jim Hawkins (Tom Sweet) and his mother (Hayley Atwell) come into possession of a mysterious treasure map that leads to untold booty. However, that map also leads to Long John Silver (Oyelowo), a legendary pirate who could mean doom or destiny for Jim and his mother. Add to that mix Aaron Graham (Jack Huston), a British agent with his own secret agenda, and the ingredients are all there for adventure in the golden age of piracy. It all starts on Sunday, October 11, when all six episodes of Treasure Island premiere on MGM+.
