2026 has been a slow year for Ridley Scott, who finally returned to the sci-fi genre for the release of his new movie, The Dog Stars. Scott had taken some time off from sci-fi movies after last directing Alien: Covenant in 2017, but he was ready to return to the genre he helped revolutionize after less than 10 years. Things didn’t exactly go according to plan for Scott’s new dystopian thriller, though. Despite the star power of Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley, The Dog Stars eked out only $39 million at the box office, making it one of Scott’s lowest-grossing movies ever. The Dog Stars was recently removed from over 3,000 theaters in the last week, meaning it’s now playing on less than 100 screens across the world.
Ridley Scott has had a string of misfires between The Dog Stars, Gladiator II, and Napoleon, but the 88-year-old director isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Earlier this year, news broke that Scott’s next movie would be a remake of Treasure Island, and it was reported just a few weeks later that Hugh Jackman had boarded the project in a leading role. During the press tour for The Dog Stars just a few weeks ago, Scott told Collider that he was also eyeing Adolescence star Owen Cooper for a key role in the film, along with Hugh Grant. This afternoon, Sony Pictures officially announced that Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island will be released in theaters in one year, on November 11, 2027. The film will be released just a few weeks before 24 Jump Street, which is bringing back both Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill to reprise their roles.
What Else Do We Know About Ridley Scott’s ‘Treasure Island’ Movie?
While it was originally thought that Hugh Jackman would star as Long John Silver in Treasure Island, it has now been confirmed via a press release from Sony that he will instead star as the legendary pirate, Blackbeard. Sony also announced the casting of both Cooper and Hugh Grant, but no details about their roles were released at this time. Sony’s official description for the “new take” on Treasure Island reads as follows: “That story follows a young boy who uncovers the map to a legendary buried treasure, and he embarks on a perilous sea voyage to claim a hidden fortune, only to find himself locked in a deadly battle of wits with the charismatic and treacherous pirate Long John Silver.”
