Miami Vice ’85, Joseph Kosinski‘s high-octane reimagining of the classic 1980s TV series, is moving full speed ahead, like a go-fast boat full of contraband with its outboard motor pointed at Havana. The film’s already lined up a starry cast, and it’s just added one of the breakout stars of last summer’s Superman. Universal will release the movie on May 19, 2028.
Based on the TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, Miami Vice ’85 is set in the sun and sin-soaked climes of 1980s Miami. Mismatched vice cops Sonny Crockett (Austin Butler, Elvis) and Ricardo Tubbs (Michael B. Jordan, Creed) are thrown together to clean up the city’s underworld. The film is also set to star Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2), Camila Morrone (Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen), Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick), John Leguizamo (The Odyssey), and Andrew Schulz (Tires).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Edi Gathegi has now joined the cast. He’ll play a small-time crook with big-time ambitions that soon have him in hot water. Gathegi has previously starred in X-Men: First Class, the Twilight series, and For All Mankind; last year, he stole the show as droll tech genius Mr. Terrific in Superman. He’s set to reprise the role in next year’s Man of Tomorrow, and is also slated to get his own spin-off series. He’ll need to clear his schedule soon; production on Miami Vice: ’85 will reportedly begin in November, shooting in both New York and Miami.
Who Are the Creatives Behind ‘Miami Vice: ’85’?
Koskinski, the high-speed hitmaker behind movies like Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie, turns his attentions to the 1980s drug trade in the new film; while plot details are being kept under wraps, expect boat chases. Dan Gilroy, who penned and directed the films Nightcrawler and Velvet Buzzsaw, as well as six episodes of Andor under the direction of brother Tony Gilroy, will be writing the script. Kosinski will also produce alongside Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions.
Miami Vice ’85 will debut in theaters on May 19, 2028.
