Four years ago, this campy 7-episode thriller, inspired by real events and featuring a star-studded ensemble cast, premiered on Netflix as a miniseries. Shortly after its release, a second season was greenlit, but details on production were limited, leading to speculation that the show might have been quietly cancelled. However, it has now become clear that Netflix is moving ahead with the new season, with filming dates officially confirmed.
Loosely based on a 2018 article from The Cut about The Watcher of Westfield, New Jersey, The Watcher is the returning Netflix thriller that you might have forgotten about. The true story centers on married couple Derek and Maria Broaddus, who purchased a six-bedroom home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, for $1.3 million. From 2014 to 2017, they were tormented by an unknown individual who sent them a series of harassing letters signed “The Watcher,” which ultimately led them to refrain from moving in due to safety concerns for their family. They eventually sold the house to a young couple who have reportedly not been contacted by The Watcher.
In October 2022, the Netflix adaptation, created by longtime collaborators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, was released. The following month, it was renewed for a second season, now confirmed to be in pre-production, according to What’s on Netflix. Filming is set to start in New York on October 27, 2026, and will conclude on March 9, 2027. Therefore, a premiere date should be anticipated sometime in mid-2027 or early 2028, pending Netflix’s official announcement. While Season 1 centered on the Brannock family, The Watcher Season 2 will shift its focus to a college setting, revolving around a fraternity. The new storyline will include “a pledge, a freshman whose night turns to terror, and a senior frat brother.”
‘The Watcher’ Season 2 Is Finally Moving Forward
When The Watcher debuted four years ago, it was a tremendous hit for Netflix, amassing 125 million hours viewed within the first five days and quickly claiming the top spot globally, dethroning Murphy‘s other hit series, Dahmer. The following week, it garnered an additional 148.2 million viewing hours and held the top spot on the Nielsen streaming charts for several consecutive weeks. However, critics were less enthusiastic, with the psychological thriller earning a mediocre 54% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and several reviewers suggesting the talented cast saved the show from being unwatchable. The Watcher stars Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Jennifer Coolidge, Margo Martindale, Richard Kind, and Mia Farrow.
