Among the characters that have defined the spy genre across generations is Ian Fleming’s James Bond. Multiple actors have donned the world-famous 007 persona and branded a license to kill, and many have enjoyed his preference for shaken, not stirred martinis. From Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, each generation has their favorite version of the character who’s now synonymous with the genre.
So when Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson sold the creative rights to Amazon MGM Studios last year, fans were both terrified and excited. For decades, James Bond has been an exclusive film franchise; every actor who played the titular spy and every actor who played the antagonist has found a special place in pop culture. So now when Amazon is behind the legacy franchise, some fans fear franchise dilution, but most are excited to see fresh faces on the roster.
Amazon has assembled a solid team comprising powerhouse producers Amy Pascal (Sony‘s Spider-Man films) and David Heyman (Harry Potter franchise), along with director Denis Villeneuve, who is the mind behind the Dune franchise and Blade Runner 2049. He has come on board with a single-picture deal to direct Bond 26. He’ll be directing from a script by Steven Knight, who is the man behind Peaky Blinders, House of Guinness, Taboo, and more. However, the most exciting news is yet to come out of the studio, i.e., the lead actor and his antagonist, and Amazon has been on a hunt for a younger cast.
While fans have dreamed up a plethora of favorites like Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, among others, rumor mills also churn out names ranging from actors Jack O’Connell, Harris Dickinson, and Jack Lowden to stars like Jacob Elordi, Theo James, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. While that information is tightly under wraps, a new report suggests that James Bond 26 might have found its villain.
Ewan Mitchell Might Be the Next Bond Villain
The Sun reports that Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond Targaryen in House of the Dragon, is a contender for the next Bond Villain. “They’re looking for an up-and-coming name rather than an established star, and someone with a very distinct look,” a source is quoted. Mitchell perfectly fits the bill, and the 29-year-old actor is also in the right age group for the expected cast. What makes Mitchell the perfect option for Amazon is the fact that “he has accrued a good CV, but is not as established an actor as some of the names who have been linked to the return of Bond.”
