One of 2026’s biggest blockbusters is returning to IMAX, giving fans another chance to experience it in the premium format. Since its release, the feature has grossed over $1.7 billion worldwide and earned widespread praise from critics and audiences. Now is another opportunity to watch the movie in the format the filmmaker intended.
The Odyssey is an action-adventure fantasy feature directed by Christopher Nolan, based on Homer‘s ancient Greek epic poem of the same name. The feature stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, and follows his decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. Meanwhile, his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) deal with suitors vying for Penelope’s hand. The feature made history as the first major movie shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. Because of the hype surrounding the movie and its groundbreaking use of the format, IMAX 70mm screenings were in extremely high demand while other screens had a cropped version of the movie.
Now, moviegoers have another chance to watch The Odyssey in IMAX as the feature returns to select theaters this week. Tickets for the theatrical return are on sale, so fans who missed out during its original run have another opportunity to experience it on the biggest screen possible. The Odyssey currently holds a 94% Certified Fresh critics score and a 96% Verified Hot audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise directed toward its performances, storytelling, and IMAX cinematography. Collider‘s Joe Schmidt gave The Odyssey a 9/10 in his review, praising Nolan‘s storytelling and the cast’s performances. As of writing, The Odyssey has become the second-highest-grossing film of 2026, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as well as becoming the 11th highest-grossing film of all Time, sitting in between Zootopia 2 and Inside Out 2.
What Else Is Coming To IMAX This Year?
If you missed out on getting tickets for The Odyssey‘s IMAX return, don’t fret, as other highly anticipated films will be entering IMAX theaters this year. One of them is Dune: Part Three, which arrives in December and will be an IMAX exclusive in America while its rival, Avengers: Doomsday will be shown in select IMAX theaters internationally. Additionally, both Godzilla Minus Zero and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping are coming to IMAX on November 6 and November 20, respectively.
The Odyssey will return to select IMAX theaters beginning October 9, 2026.
