The Mummy 4 has yet to wrap filming, but we’ve got a Great Pyramid-sized update on the upcoming legacy horror sequel. The film is set to hit theaters in one year, and its official social media accounts have unveiled one important piece of information: the movie’s title, which contains an homage to the franchise’s past and a hint to its future. It will be released on October 15, 2027.
The film is the fourth entry in the saga that began with 1999’s The Mummy, continued with 2001’s The Mummy Returns, and seemingly concluded in 2008 with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The new film will reunite Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as adventurers Rick and Evie O’Connell. Both starred in the first two films, but Weisz was recast with Maria Bello in Dragon Emperor, which will be disregarded by the new film.
Now we know that the new movie will be titled The Mummy: Book of the Dead. It’s an appropriate title: the Book of the Dead was an ancient funerary text placed in tombs by the ancient Egyptians. It’s also been a major plot element in the first two films. In the original movie, it is unearthed and accidentally awakens the immortal sorcerer Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), and is later used to strip away his supernatural powers and kill him. In The Mummy Returns, it is used to resurrect Imhotep and later helps Rick restore Evie to life. It seems the legendary artifact will once again play a central role in the O’Connells’ latest adventure.
