Simon Pegg is set to headline an unusual new dark comedy that imagines a world where smartphones suddenly become deadly. The Mission: Impossible star will lead the cast of My Phone Died, a film centered on a global technological catastrophe that leaves only a handful of survivors trying to navigate a collapsing society.
According to Variety, the film also stars Mark Duplass and Haley Joel Osment. Rather than focusing on large-scale apocalyptic action, the story follows a small group of survivors whose lives are thrown into chaos when mobile phones around the world begin exploding.
Hannah Leder and Alexandra Kotcheff are writing and directing the project. The duo will also appear on screen, with production currently scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
What else do we know about My Phone Died?
The film follows five unlikely survivors after smartphones become lethal around the globe. Pegg plays Gus, a Hollywood agent who manages to survive the disaster. Duplass portrays one of Gus’ self-absorbed clients who is less fortunate, while Osment plays a recovering alcoholic working as a social media influencer.
Kotcheff will play Francis, a woman who leaves her Amish community and becomes involved with Osment’s character, while Leder portrays Lillie, a pregnant, agoraphobic aspiring actress. Together, the group must figure out how to survive as the world around them rapidly unravels.
The project marks the second feature collaboration between Leder and Kotcheff, following their 2019 comedy-drama The Planters. The filmmakers are producing through their respective banners, Thank You So Much and Fire Tiger Films. Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park International has acquired international sales rights ahead of the American Film Market.
With a cast led by Simon Pegg, Mark Duplass, and Haley Joel Osment, My Phone Died combines performers known for balancing comedy and drama. A release date has not yet been announced.
