Synopsis – Home Minister Janardhan Jagirdarand chief Minister Anna Saheb are much concerned over the criminal activities of underworld dons Rawal and Rauf Lala. Rawal is operating from Bangkok while Rauf supervises his gang from Mumbai. The famous Encounter Squad is activated to counter the gangsters and restore peace in the area. The formidable Sadhu Agashe (Nana Patekar) is requested to take charge of the peace-keeping mission. At first he is reluctant but after continuous insistence, he agrees to launch a counter attack against Rawal and Lala Rauf gangs and the action begins.
My Take – There was a time when Nana Patekar was one of the most sought actor for character roles, be it in action, comedy, a little romance, an example of crazy or an emotional character, simple words defining him in every role would be – pure awesomeness! Ab Tak Chappan (2004), a film based on the accounts of an encounter specialist police officer was one of his last brutal great films. Now a decade after ‘Ab Tak Chappan’ was released, this apology of a sequel which brutally kills the original has released. Frankly there is nothing much to talk about this film, including the storyline – a decade after the events of the prequel Sadhu Agaste (Nana Patekar) is called back by Home Minister to tackle the raising gang war in the city. Yup! thats its! People kill & get killed!
The honest ones turn out to be the corrupt ones, which the presumably corrupt ones turn out to be..well I am not sure about that yet! There are no songs or unnecessary dialogues to put the brakes on the story, but there are no riveting twists either to make it entertaining from start to finish. The twists are far too predictable and lame. While Patekar takes up every frame, actors such as Gul Panag who plays a crime reporter and Ashutosh Rana who plays Agashe’s jealous colleague, provide him support. Nana Patekar kept sleep walking in his role , frankly he doesn’t get much to do with his character. Gul Panag was too loud! She will always keep you wondering why the hell is she so aggressive! And Ashutosh Rana mostly works as a comic relief in the film.
On the whole there is actually nothing much to say about this so called excuse of a sequel – ‘Ab Tak Chhappan 2’. Shoddy production qualities, uneven background music, jaded dialogues and pointless, unimaginative script scheme together to make this sequel a bit of a disaster. If you are a Nana Patekar fan, go watch Shimit Amin’s Ab Tak Chappan than the sequel! “Sequels rarely turn out as good as the original. And this films fits that theory. Nilesh Girkar’s story might have succeeded in getting the aged super cop to step back on the battlefield, but he throws him an unworthy fight. Eleven years after director Shimit Amin created the magnanimous encounter specialist Sadhu, Gulab crushes him with an unfitting comeback. Disaster!
