Miles Morales Rumoured To Lead Sony’s Animated ‘Spider-Man’ Movie!!

Tom Holland established himself quite well as the new Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and will take center stage in Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming when it debuts next July. Robert Downey Jr. a.k.a. Tony Stark/Iron Man will also be making an appearance in that film thanks to a cross-promotional deal between studios. However, Sony has other plans for the Spider-Verse that don’t necessarily feature any crossovers from the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe. And those plans might just include Miles Morales.

As HH reports, Sony’s planned but still untitled animated Spider-Man movie may just be the first to feature someone other than Peter Parker in the title role. More importantly, Morales represents a very different take on the hero, one with Black and Hispanic heritage that non-White audiences, especially the younger generation, could more easily relate to. Marvel Comics made the change as part of their All-New, All-Different Marvel branding in 2015, and now it looks like the cinematic world is following suit.

Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, Morales’ Spider-Man has been around since 2011, first appearing in “Ultimate Fallout” #4. [spoiler alert] In the comics at this time, Peter Parker was dead and the world was reeling from the loss. [/spoiler alert] Morales’ powers, which were revealed in the “Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man” line, were derived in a similar way to Peter Parker’s: When an Oscorp scientist uses Parker’s blood to recreate the formula that gave Spider-Man his powers, this formula is stolen by the Prowler, whose nephew happens to be Miles Morales. One of the spiders created as part of the experiment tags along for the ride and bites Morales when he was visiting his uncle. And there you have it; a new Spider-Man is born!

This is actually one Spider-Man origin story I wouldn’t mind seeing on the big screen because it’s never been shown before. Unfortunately, there’s no confirmation of the rumor at this point and there’s no information on the plot that we can use in order to corroborate it. There’s still quite a bit of time for this one, so keep an eye out for more from the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-written animated Spider-Man movie between now and it’s December 21, 2018 release date.
