Rejoice, Preacher flock! AMC has renewed its new comic book for a second season. What’s more, the new season will have 13 episodes instead of 10, which means AMC is definitely looking to stay invested in the series. The viewing numbers haven’t been particularly high (1.9 million in the key adult demographic in delayed ratings, which take into account DV-R and online views), but keep in mind that most AMC series start off pretty slowly. Further, Preacher has been up against a little genre show called Game of Thrones on Sunday nights, so you know, that probably also has something to do with it.
So far five episodes of Preacher have aired, and it has admittedly started to slow down quite a bit since its bombastic premiere. As fans of the comics will know, a lot has been added to this first season that’s not in Garth Ennis‘ story, essentially setting up what looks to be an epic and more comic-faithful Season 2 (potentially). To be fair though, those who aren’t familiar with the story probably do need to be eased into its crazy world.
Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, said of the renewal (developed by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin):
“‘Preacher’ is a special television program and we’re eager to share with fans the rest of this wild first season and, now, an expanded second season. What Sam, Seth, Evan and the entire creative team have achieved in bringing Garth Ennis’ graphic novel to the screen is extraordinary. We look forward to more time with these unforgettable characters be it in Heaven, Hell, Texas or beyond.”
