Some new photos and short clips from the set of Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Spider-Man: Far From Home in Liberec, Czech Republic have found their way online. The snapshots and videos in question appear to feature Jake Gyllenhaal in costume as the iconic Spider-Man villain Mysterio (albeit without the character’s trademark fishbowl-esque helmet.)
It was first reported that Gyllenhaal had entered negotiations to play the classic Spidey villain this past May, with the casting being officially confirmed shortly thereafter. The new shots of the actor decked out in his Mysterio gear seemingly take place during a particularly explosive scene of the upcoming film, possibly even its climactic final battle.
In the original Marvel Comics, Mysterio (real name Quentin Beck) was once a skilled stuntman and visual effects wizard working in Hollywood. Once he realized that this would only get him so far and his bid to become an actor didn’t pan out, however, he decided to use his considerable special effects talents to become the illusionist supervillain Marvel fans know and love. From there, he went on to become one of the most prominent and enduring members of Peter Parker’s rogues’ gallery.
While Marvel technically hasn’t yet confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal will be playing Mysterio, there are very few other Spidey villains whose outfits match the one he is wearing. One thing is for certain, though: Given how elaborate the set of this scene is, the real Quentin Beck would probably be in heaven working on this movie.
Directed by Homecoming‘s Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Hemky Madera, Tony Revolori, Jake Gyllenhaal, Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson. It hits theaters on July 5, 2019.
