How I Met Your Mother, Last Man Standing, This Is Us and Awake are getting international remakes as part of a global scripted formats drive by Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution.
The Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Segel-fronted comedy is being remade in China, Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing is getting remakes in India and Vietnam, while Jason Isaacs-fronted police procedural Awake has been sold into Russia and Dan Fogelman’s drama This Is Us is heading to France and Holland.
The scripted formats deals come as the Asia Television Forum kicks off in Singapore, where the Hollywood studio will be looking to secure even more local agreements.
Gina Brogi, President of Global Distribution, Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, told Deadline, “There is a much greater interest from the international community to have locally-produced content and that’s winning the day when it comes to ratings. We’ve upped our game in the scripted formats arena; they’re really starting to get some traction.”
The CBS comedy, which was created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, has been sold to Chinese producer New Classics Media. The company will produce 30 episodes of the format and will extend the show’s 30-minute run time to an hour for the Chinese market. The show, which ended in 2014, has previously been adapted in Russia and the Middle East.
Brogi said that she believed that the fact that How I Met Your Mother resonated with young adults would help it in China’s booming market. “China has become much more active lately with local productions; their production community has really upped their game in terms of producing their own content with their own stars and this really is a result of that,” she said.
Last Man Standing, which was picked up by Fox for a seventh season after being dropped by ABC, is being remade in India for Star India. The series, which stars Allen as a sporting goods employee and family man, is being produced by Shashi Sumeet Productions. TCFTVD has previously found success in India with a local version of 24, which starred Anil Kapoor, and was sold into nearly 50 territories. Similarly, the comedy is being remade in Vietnam for Vietnam Television. The show has been licensed for 42 episodes and is produced by Vietnam Film Company.
Awake, the police procedural-meets-fantasy drama, is being remade by Star Media in Russia for Channel One. The show has been picked up for an initial twelve-part run with Evgeniy Mironov cast in the lead role.
Finally, hot on the heels of a Turkish remake deal, This Is Us has been optioned in France by Authentic Productions and NL Films in the Netherlands
The local scripted formats are being overseen by Dorothy Crompton, VP of Format Licensing at Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, while Fox Networks Group Content Distribution will sell the local versions internationally.
