Despite the second season not yet airing, Apple TV+ is giving Servant a season 3, according to the show’s executive producer, M. Night Shyamalan. Many of the young streaming service’s shows have not been met with the anticipated acclaim Apple was hoping for when they launched Apple TV+. Servant, a psychological horror from one of the entertainment world’s most interesting creators, is proving to be one of the exceptions to Apple TV+‘s early struggles.
Servant takes a look at a Philadelphia couple taking care of a doll after their infant son’s death. The couple hires a nanny to help take care of the reborn doll, which is when scary things begin to happen for everyone involved. One of Apple TV+‘s first prestige shows, Servant premiered with three episodes on November 28, 2019. From there, it finished out its first 10-episode season with weekly installments.
The show was renewed for a second season a week before the first even began airing, and Apple TV+ is giving Servant an early renewal once again. Shyamalan himself took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. He called Apple a “good partner” in helping to create the kind of series he wants. He also hinted that there might be much more to come down the road, as he wants to tell his story “in 40 parts.” Check out Shyamalan‘s tweet about the series’ season 3 renewal below:
The renewal may come as a shock to some, as the second season of Servant isn’t even set to premiere until January 15, 2021. But Apple likely felt it was worth the risk to renew the show considering the favorable reviews the first season received, garnering an 84 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is not the first time Apple TV+ decided to renew a show for a third season ahead of its second season debut; For All Mankind was renewed for a third season, season 2 not due to premiere until February 19, 2021.
It’s hard to say why Servant is working for Apple TV+ while other shows primarily aren’t, but it will be interesting to see where season 2 takes the show, with the production of the second season likely wrapped before the guarantee of a third. One possible theory for the upcoming season is a role switch between Sean and Dorothy. Whatever happens next, fans of Servant know there will be more to come down the road.
