Oh what a year this has been for Bollywood! A complete disaster that not only saw a string of big budget flops, but saw the Hindi cinema industry having to contend with backlash from conservative right-wing forces and constant threat of bans and boycott calls and hashtags from the amorphous moral police. Also making things rather awkward was the blockbuster success stories attached to the dubbed versions of RRR, KGF: Chapter 2, and Kantara, who not only outscored original Hindi film content in comparison but managed to dominate home turfs for weeks after their release.
What is a rather sad fact that some of these ‘flop’ films where actually ‘excellent’ films which saw themselves rejected completely at the ticket window, despite critical acclaim attached to them. However, thanks to the change in the cinematic landscape with so many OTT platforms in the mix, particularly Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, and ZEE5, the shelf life of these films has just gotten longer, allowing them to receive the audience love they deserve.
In my opinion, here are some of the best films churned out by the Hindi film industry this year:
- An Action Hero
- Monica, O My Darling
- Gangubai Kathiawadi
- Runway 34
- Drishyam 2
- Badhaai Do
