Your favorite unethical therapist, Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) will soon return to your screens as filming for Season 2 of Shrinking has wrapped. It’s the first major update we’re getting from the Apple TV+ hit show following the exciting announcement that the Ted Lasso star, Brett Goldstein, who is one of the show’s creators, will be stepping in front of the cameras for Season 2. No release date for Season 2 has been confirmed yet, but with filming now done and dusted for the comedy-drama series, fans can expect a premiere sooner rather than later.
Created by Goldstein, Segel, and Bill Lawrence, Shrinking Season 1 thrust us into the chaotic life of the troubled therapist, Jimmy Laird. In need of some healing himself, as he is in the middle of grieving his wife’s death, Laird resorts to adopting unconventional methods in dealing with his client’s issues, bluntly telling them what he thinks about their problems. More often than not, Laird’s bizarre approach to mental health works as a charm, as some of his clients leave his office feeling better and more motivated to tackle life’s challenges head-on. The show features a stacked cast including multiple-award-winning actor Harrison Ford, who steps into the role of Dr. Paul Rhoades, Laird’s colleague at Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center. Also starring Jessica Williams (Fantastic Beasts), and Michael Urie, Shrinking proved an instant hit for Apple TV+ and received an early Season 2 renewal shortly before the Season 1 finale.
Season 2 began filming in January 2024, and after roughly six months of production, principal photography for the sophomore season has now been completed. The news was shared on social media by the show’s off-screen talent, Linda Choi, who is a part of the makeup department. Choi shared a photo of George Guzman, the lead of the make-up department, thanking him for making the production for Season 2 “the funniest best most amazing season ever,” a mild tease that even wilder shenanigans are in store for fans. The timeline for production for Season 2 seems to mirror that of Season 1, and following this pattern, fans can expect Season 2 to arrive later this year, earliest or probably early next year.
What Will Shrinking Season 2 Be About?
Apple TV+ is playing plot details for Season 2 close to the cuffs, and fans might have to wait for the release of promotional materials to know what theme the sophomore season will tackle. In his latest interview with Collider, co-creator Lawrence teased:
“We knew the first year was about grief because we announced it. Harrison Ford’s character says, ‘Grief is a sneaky little fucker.’ We knew what the second year was about, and Harrison will announce it in the first episode of the second year. We knew, going in, that the ending of the first year would lead us into what we wanted to write about in the second season. I don’t wanna do any spoilers, but I don’t think it’s what people will imagine it’s going to be. They’re not gonna be in a courtroom.”
