Prime Video has unveiled the official trailer for the new Wolf Productions police drama On Call, and it’s already proving to be a far cry from Law & Order, One Chicago, or FBI. The visceral take on a procedural unfolds in Long Beach, California, as a veteran cop, played by Troian Bellisario, teams up with an ambitious rookie, played by Brandon Larracuente, to navigate the challenges of policing in a more volatile climate than ever. That includes taking on cases that leave a lasting impact on their psyche and clashing with higher-ups in law enforcement as new policies get in the way of their approach. The footage brings viewers closer to the action than ever, with bodycam, dash-camera, and cellphone footage embracing a cinema verité effect that grounds their work.
One note On Call wants to hit on is that a single distressing call can completely change an officer’s outlook on the job. Early on, Traci Harmon (Bellisario) does her best to make her younger partner Alex Diaz’s (Larracuente) early days as comfortable as possible while still demanding effort and teaching him the harsh realities of protecting and serving. It doesn’t take long before he’s thrown into the deep end, chasing a man until he leaps off a building and busting down doors to keep the peace. Compared to Wolf‘s other procedurals with tight-knit units, there’s an “us against the world” mentality that comes off as the partners bond, while Harmon faces scrutiny from her fellow officers. Things will only get more precarious as the pair are called into bigger, more dangerous operations and are put directly under the microscope.
Beyond making the action feel realistic, the use of bodycam footage and the like keeps the tension extremely high throughout the trailer by keeping vision limited. Each operation will take a visible toll on the officers as the season unfolds, but it also looks to bring them closer together as Diaz learns to trust Harmon’s moral compass. In addition to the Pretty Little Liars and The Good Doctor stars Bellisario and Larracuente, On Call also features a supporting cast with Eriq La Salle, Lori Loughlin, and Rich Ting.
