‘Captain Planet’: Glen Powell Gives Disappointing Update on Movie!!

Glen Powell is on a tear at the moment, and you’d think that a man in his position, a bona fide A-lister, a movie star, would have his pick of projects across Hollywood and would be able to make almost anything he wants at this stage. However, it doesn’t seem to be the case, Powell has been attached to Captain Planet as a star and co-writer for years now, and he recently delivered a disappointing update on the film, which is based around the animated series of the same name from the 1990s.

Speaking to IndieWire while hard at work in London filming The Running Man for Edgar Wright, Powell opened up at length on a variety of subjects including his relationship with Richard Linklater, birding and his dog, Brisket Powell. One other thing that did come up, though, was the status of Captain Planet and unfortunately, it’s not quite the positive update we all hoped for.

I’m very, very passionate about ‘Captain Planet.’ I want that one to get made. And I feel like we have a very, very strong way into that world and something that I think the world wants to see, but the people that own that property have other ideas and other plans, and that’s fine. Look, I’ll just keep making movies and keep doing what I’m going to do, and eventually, we’ll see if that ever comes back around. But at the end of the day, it’s out of your control.”

What Exactly is ‘Captain Planet’?

Conceived by media mogul, environmentalist and old fashioned wrasslin’ enthusiast Ted Turner, the owner of TBS and TNT, the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers debuted in 1990 on TBS and syndication. It followed a group of teenagers, the Planeteers, who were granted elemental powers by Gaia, the spirit of the Earth. Their job was to battle a combination of eco-villains, from demented scientists to mutant rats and even space aliens. When the threats became too great, the Planeteers combined their powers to summon Captain Planet, a blue-skinned, green-haired superhero with a knack for cracking wise and a commitment to saving the environment. The cast for the series was staggering: Meg Ryan, Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Sheen, Jeff Goldblum, and LeVar Burton all contributed to the show, which ran for 113 episodes from 1990 to 1996.
