Few filmmakers have had as forceful a come-up as Ryan Coogler, who has made a habit of working with Oscar-winning star Michael B. Jordan. After the duo worked together years ago on the crime thriller hit Fruitvale Station, they later reunited on Creed, the legacy sequel to the Sylvester Stallone Rocky movies. Coogler did not return to direct Creed II (directed by Steven Calple Jr.) or Creed III (directed by Michael B. Jordan), but he executive produced both films and was heavily involved as a creative figure. The duo then worked together on both Black Panther movies, and while his role has yet to be confirmed, it would be shocking if Jordan was left out of the third film in the works at Marvel. Their recent collaboration, Sinners, shattered records on its way to becoming one of the biggest movies of 2025.
Back in 2018, Ryan Coogler founded his multimedia company, Proximity Media, which has been his producing banner since. This afternoon, Netflix announced it had struck a deal with Proximity to develop new shows for the streamer. No projects have been announced at the time of writing, and it’s unclear if this will extend into movies or be strictly for TV shows. Ryan Coogler and co-founders Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian did release a statement on the partnership, which reads as follows:
“We started Proximity Media with a simple goal: to tell event-driven stories that bring people in close proximity with often overlooked subjects. As we continue to expand Proximity’s television business, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix, a company that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling.”
Is ‘Black Panther 3’ Ryan Coogler’s Next Movie?
Ryan Coogler has confirmed that Black Panther 3 will be his next movie — he said as much several times on the press tour for Sinners, admitting that he was already working with Marvel on drafts. Coogler is working on an X-Files reboot moving forward quickly at Hulu, which will likely come before Black Panther 3, but the MCU film will be his next outing on the big screen. Denzel Washington also let slip while he was on the press tour for Gladiator II that Coogler was writing him a part in the film, and while this has since been walked back by producers, Coogler mentioned that he’s writing a part specifically for him. Now that Washington is winding down what has been a legendary career, he can safely say he’s accomplished basically everything after he joins the MCU.
