Christopher Nolan has added one more mariner to his latest cinematic voyage. Shogun star Cosmo Jarvis is the latest actor to join the British director’s new version of The Odyssey. Deadline reports that filming of the ancient epic is now underway.
Jarvis joins a cast that is already jam-packed with thespians, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, and Corey Hawkins. Nobody’s roles, including Jarvis‘, have been revealed yet. All that’s known about the film is that it will adapt Homer‘s classic epic poem about Odysseus and his ten-year voyage to return home to the island of Ithaca from the Trojan War. Along the way, he’s waylaid by monsters, gods, and witches, while his faithful wife Penelope awaits his return. The only glimpse of the film we’ve seen so far is a promotional image of a bearded Damon in a cloak and helmet. The film is currently shooting on location in Morocco before moving on to Sicily; it is slated to be released in theaters on July 17, 2026.
Who Is Cosmo Jarvis?
British actor and musician Jarvis broke out in the 2016 period drama Lady Macbeth, alongside Florence Pugh. He has subsequently starred in the Irish crime drama Calm With Horses, the Appalachian drama The Evening Hour, and Carrie Cracknell‘s 2022 adaptation of Jane Austen‘s Persuasion. In 2024, he had his biggest hit yet, starring as John Blackthorne, a British sailor stranded in feudal Japan, in the FX miniseries Shogun. The series premiered to rave reviews and took home a number of awards; a second season is in the works, but it is unclear if Jarvis will return. This year, he’ll be seen opposite Robert De Niro (and Robert De Niro) in Barry Levinson‘s gangster movie Alto Knights; with Guy Pearce in the Australian prison drama Inside; and Alex Garland‘s Iraq War movie Warfare. He is also slated to star in Guy Ritchie‘s Wife & Dog.
The Odyssey will be shot in IMAX, like many of Nolan‘s previous features, and will premiere in IMAX theaters worldwide. Hoyte van Hoytema, who won an Oscar for his work on Nolan‘s Oppenheimer in 2024, will serve as the film’s cinematographer.
The Odyssey will be released in theaters on July 17, 2026.
