He-Man and Nosferatu walk into a bar. No, that can’t be right, but it kind of is. Today, Deadline reported that Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe) and Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu) will star in Netflix’s upcoming film, Mosquito Bowl. The title is the first feature-length production to come from Peter Berg’s deal with the streamer, following the director’s uber-successful breakaway historical drama, American Primeval, which toppled viewership charts earlier this year. Along with directing, Berg also co-penned the adaptation with Mark L. Smith, which was first told through the New York Times bestseller, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, by Buzz Bissinger.
Berg has never been one to stay away from football, and Mosquito Bowl will be no different. The film will pick up following the harrowing attack on Pearl Harbor, which launched the United States into the middle of WWII. Alongside famous faces like James Stewart and Clark Gable, a group of the country’s best and brightest football players stepped away from their love of the game and instead embraced their love of country, enlisting in the efforts. With the invasion of Okinawa on the horizon, the group throws down an epic pigskin game alongside some of the biggest names in the sport. While they may not have known it at the time, it would be the final scrimmage for many of them. As of right now, Galitzine and Skarsgård’s roles haven’t been disclosed.
Not only will Mosquito Bowl mark a reunion between Berg and Netflix, but it also serves as a repairing between the director and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, with the duo previously joining forces on Friday Night Lights. In addition to Imagine Entertainment, Berg will produce under his Film 44 banner. Alex Gayner also produces, while Ezra Emanuel joins as executive producer.
What Else Are Bill Skarsgård and Nicholas Galitzine Up To?
Skarsgård has just come off a wildly successful run in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, in which he played the titular undead bloodsucker. He also recently appeared opposite Anthony Hopkins in the thriller, Locked, and has several other projects lined up, including Gus Van Sant’s historical crime drama, Dead Man’s Wire, and Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood. He’s also slated to make a comeback in one of his most acclaimed roles, jumping from the big screen to the small screen in Max’s It: Welcome to Derry.
Meanwhile, in addition to leading a stacked cast in the live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe, Galitzine will soon appear opposite the likes of Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson in the mystery comedy Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie. On top of that, he’s also hard at work opposite Maika Monroe and Charlie XCX in Julia Jackman’s 100 Nights of Hero.
