Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) finally gets what he deserves in the final chapter of You; what satisfaction that must bring to many viewers. But the million-dollar question now is, is that truly the end of the psychotic killer? Season 5 of the psychological thriller premiered on Thursday, April 24, marking the last installment in the series with Joe arrested and sent to prison. While there appears to be zero hopes of the lead character ever escaping, even with his ability to get out of cages, a skill honed through the years, that may not be the last fans see of Joe.
There’s the possibility of a You spin-off happening, but nothing is set in stone. Discussing the show’s latest season with TV Insider, co-showrunners Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo weighed in on its future, hinting at a continuation, but rather than Joe, his son Henry (Frankie DeMaio) will be at the center, maybe older and dealing with what his father has done. It’s worth noting that Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) fortunately gained custody of the young lad in the series finale, and they started a new life.
Will Henry Make A Great Lead in ‘You’ Spin-off?
Speaking about You getting a sequel, Lo found the idea of Joe’s son in the lead interesting, but noted the older character’s significance in the entire series, which he believed contributed to its success. In his words:
“I think it’s an interesting concept. I think that part of what makes You so successful is Penn Badgley as Joe. I personally haven’t gone down the road of what it would be like for a show centered around his son because I just think that the part of the DNA of You is so much Penn playing Joe.”
Adding to the conversation, Foley mentioned a “brilliant” pilot penned by a British writer that could work as a spin-off for You. Apparently, the scribe wrote about Henry and reconnecting with his father, which the EP shared, saying:
“When we were doing our London season, we were trying to hire a British writer. A writer that we didn’t hire wrote a brilliant script, which was basically that. I’ve read it. This guy’s pilot was the equivalent of the son of Joe and then reconnecting with his father, and it was brilliant, but I almost feel like that’s another reason why I can’t do it, because of a little thing called a lawsuit.”
You Season 5, starring Badgley, Ritchie, DeMaio, Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp, and Griffin Matthews, among others, premiered on Netflix on April 24.
