Brokeback Mountain will return to theaters for special screenings this June as the movie celebrates its 20th anniversary. An official trailer accompanies the announcement which showcases some of the most pertinent moments of the film. The movie’s return to theaters provides fans with an opportunity to not only see this classic again on the big screen but to also see Ledger again, who gives the most nuanced performance of his career in this one.

‘Brokeback Mountain’ Is a Classic

Brokeback Mountain is a sweeping epic that explores the lives of two young men, Ennis Del Mar (Ledger), a ranch hand, and Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal), a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. Things get complicated when Ennis marries his longtime sweetheart, Alma (Michelle Williams) and Jack marries a fellow rodeo rider, while the two men keep up their tortured and sporadic affair over the course of 20 years. The complications, joys and heartbreak they experience shows their endurance and power of love.

The screenplay written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana brilliantly deconstructs the cowboy ideology and traditional masculinity and shows how dangerous they can be in a constantly changing world that is usually scared of things it doesn’t understand. It was a commercial success earning $178.1 million at the box office against a budget of $14 million. The movie has an 88 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

Along with Ledger as Ennis and Gyllenhaal as Jack the movie also cast brilliant performers like Michelle Williams as Alma Beers Del Mar, Anne Hathaway as Lureen Newsome Twist, Randy Quaid as Joe Aguirre, Linda Cardellini as Cassie Cartwright, Anna Faris as Lashawn Malone and David Harbour as Randall Malone. Further rounding off the cast are Roberta Maxwell, Peter McRobbie, Kate Mara, Scott Michael Campbell, Graham Beckel and many more.

Brokeback Mountain will have a special screening on June 22 and 25.
