Warner Bros. is conjuring up a little something special for horror fans today, with the debut set of images for The Conjuring: Last Rites. Yes, we’ve almost made it to the end of the road with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the franchise that saw them step into the roles of world-famous and divisive paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, respectively. The duo has put the fear of god, Valak, and Annabelle in audiences over the last several movies, and Last Rites promises to bring it all home with the infamous Smurl family haunting.
All the main players are stepping into the flash of the camera in today’s first batch of images. One shot showcases Ed (Wilson) and Lorraine (Farmiga) as they give a presentation to an audience. On the screen behind them is a jack-in-the-box clown whose sinister smile takes us all the way back to the Annabelle films of yesteryear. A handful of other photos feature Mia Tomlinson, who will appear as Ed and Lorraine’s daughter, Judy, giving her parents a hand with their latest case. Finally, other snaps begin to tell the story of the Warren’s younger years, showcasing Madison Lawlor and Orion Smith as the youthful versions of Lorraine and Ed, respectively.
At this point, we know that Last Rites will be Wilson and Farmiga’s final time packing up the car and dipping into some ghostly situations, but with a TV series on the way, today’s debut images are giving us reason to scratch our heads and wonder about what’s to come. Before we met the duo in 2013’s The Conjuring, the Warrens already had plenty of investigations and exorcisms under their belts. With this in mind, could the inclusion of Lawlor and Smith point to the couple’s younger years of painting and energy-seeking before they had their big break with cases like the Perrons and those at the now-famous Amityville house?
What Will ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Be About?
Just as in the past, the latest installment in the ever-growing The Conjuring franchise will tag along with Wilson’s Ed and Farmiga’s Lorraine as they help another family in need. This time, the story will move to Pennsylvania, where a family claims to be the target of a demonic infestation. The tale is another one from the case files of the paranormal investigators, with Michael Chaves returning to the fray as director after helming other in-universe titles, including The Curse of La Llorona, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Nun II.
