The live-action Lilo & Stitch movie will open alongside Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning this weekend, and Disney is reportedly extremely confident in the film’s ability to perform at the box office. Early metrics have Lilo & Stitch earning much more than Mission: Impossible 8 at the box office during opening weekend, which wouldn’t be a surprise considering the track record of live-action remakes of beloved animated films.
However, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Disney is so sure that Lilo & Stitch will perform well that the studio is already talking about a sequel to the live-action film. Produced on a reported budget of around $100 million, Lilo & Stitch could break even on opening weekend with $200 million or more. Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman told the WSJ that Lilo & Stitch is “the kind of property that lends itself to more.”
This doesn’t mean that Mission: Impossible 8 is expected to flop at the box office by any means. Tom Cruise’s final outing as Ethan Hunt will likely perform well, but it’s safe to say not many parents will be taking their family of five to see Cruise hang off the side of an airplane. Although Snow White was considered a miss by most metrics, Disney has mostly figured out the formula for live-action remakes of classic animated films.
Who Stars in the Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Movie?
Starring in the lead role of Lilo in Lilo & Stitch is Maia Kealoha, who previously played a small role in Disney’s Moana 2. Starring alongside her in the role of Nani is Sydney Agudong, with original director and voice actor Chris Sanders reprising his role as Stitch in the film. Zach Galifianakis has also been tapped to play Jumba, with Billy Magnussen and Courtney B. Vance playing Pleakley and Cobra Bubbles.
Dean DeBlois (How to Train Your Dragon) and Sanders teamed up to write and direct the original Lilo & Stitch movie, and although both earned a writing credit on the live-action remake for their work on the original, they were not brought back to direct. Dean Fleischer Camp, who recently directed the Oscar-nominated film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, was tapped to direct Lilo & Stitch. Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes wrote the script.
