‘Carthage Must Be Destroyed’: Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio to Produce New Action Thriller!!

One of the biggest double-acts in modern cinema is back at it again. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are teaming up again, and this time they’ll both be behind the scenes. The duo is producing Carthage Must Be Destroyed, a new action thriller from Ocean’s 11 writer Ted Griffin. Deadline reports that Griffin will both write and direct the film, making it his feature directorial debut. It is set to begin production in October in Rhode Island. Carthage Must Be Destroyed will center around a drifter who comes to a crumbling Rust Belt town in the grip of a ruthless criminal syndicate. In shades of Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars, the stranger sows the seeds of chaos amidst the town’s corrupt power players, hoping to free the citizenry from their shackles.

It will be the first directorial feature for Griffin, who has previously helmed episodes of Terriers (which he created), Mad Dogs, and Patriot. Griffin is best known as a screenwriter; in addition to Ocean’s 11, he also penned the scripts for Ravenous, Matchstick Men, Killers, and Tower Heist. This won’t be his first collaboration with DiCaprio and Scorsese, either. He was a co-producer on their financial fraud epic The Wolf of Wall Street, and also played Hughes, one of the FBI agents who eventually brought down the title character, DiCaprio‘s libertine Jordan Belfort.

What Other Movies Have Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio Worked On Together?

Scorsese and DiCaprio first worked together in 2002, when Scorsese cast DiCaprio as the lead in his long-in-the-works historical epic Gangs of New York. DiCaprio came highly recommended by Robert De Niro, another longtime Scorsese collaborator, who had worked with a teenage DiCaprio in This Boy’s Life. Gangs of New York was a hit, and the collaboration between the two was a fruitful one. Scorsese cast DiCaprio in his next three films: the Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, the Boston gangster film The Departed, and the horror-tinged thriller Shutter Island. They scored another hit with 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, then, after a hiatus, collaborated again in Killers of the Flower Moon, earning them both some of the best reviews of their careers. The two are also set to work together on the harrowing historical drama The Wager.

Carthage Must Be Destroyed will be produced by Verdi ProductionsChad A. Verdi, LBI Entertainment’s Christopher Donelly, Gareth West, Michelle Verdi, Chad Verdi Jr., Paul Luba, and Jennifer Davisson. It will be executive produced by Scorsese, DiCaprio, Lisa Frechette, and Sera Verdi. It is a production of Sikelia Productions, Appian Way Productions, Verdi Productions, and Ketchup Entertainment.

Carthage Must Be Destroyed will begin filming in October in Rhode Island; no casting or release date has yet been announced.
