Last year, Taron Egerton took over Netflix with the hit movie Carry-On. This year, the British actor is diving once again into an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but this time in more understated tones. Today, Apple TV+ released the trailer for Smoke, a new investigative series that centers on an investigator who is trying to locate two serial arsonists that are wreaking fiery havoc and challenging the police. The series is set to premiere on June 27.
The trailer for Smoke suggests that the fire is one way to grab the attention of the police, but there’s something else brewing that we can’t quite put our finger on. This is reflected in Egerton‘s character, Dave Gudsen, who gets so deeply involved in the mystery that it might bring some permanent consequences for his psyche. In that scenario, it looks like police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) will be fundamental to keeping Dave grounded during the investigation.
Smoke reunites Egerton with Dennis Lehane — the duo worked together in the highly acclaimed prison thriller Black Bird. Additionally, Lehane is a best-selling author whose works have inspired some of the best investigative thrillers of recent years, including Gone Baby Gone, Live By Night, and Shutter Island. Lehane created Smoke, inspired by truth.media’s acclaimed “Firebug” podcast. Both Lehane and Egerton serve as executive producers for the series.
Is ‘Smoke’ Based On A True Story?
Smoke is based on peculiar true events that are described in the 10 episodes of the podcast “Firebug.” The original story takes place in the early ’90s and centers around the delivery of a gripping manuscript to literary agencies. The work detailed the origin of a series of fires that terrorized Southern California, and it thoroughly befuddled the police: was it a work of fiction or a confession of a prolific arsonist and murderer?
Aside from Egerton and Smollett, the cast of Smoke also features Rafe Spall (Trying), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (The Lincoln Lawyer), Hannah Emily Anderson (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Adina Porter (The Perfect Couple), Greg Kinnear (Shining Vale), and John Leguizamo (The Green Veil). The series will also feature “Smoke,” the series’ main theme that was written and performed by Thom Yorke. The song is available on Apple Music and all streaming platforms now.
Apple TV+ debuts Smoke with two episodes on June 27. The remaining seven episodes will roll out weekly on Fridays through August 15. You can check out the trailer above.
