Star Trek: Discovery‘s Shazad Latif is going where no man has gone before…but this time, instead of outer space, he’s headed to the hidden depths of the ocean. Latif stars as Captain Nemo in Nautilus, AMC’s new reimagining of Jules Verne‘s classic science fiction novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The show’s new trailer sees him set sail in the titular super-submarine, even as he’s pursued to the ends of the Earth. The series premieres June 29 on AMC and AMC+.
In the new trailer for the 19th-century-set science fiction series, which serves as a prequel to Verne’s novel, Nemo is the prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company, a globe-spanning corporation that wields more power than any government. He and his fellow prisoners are put to work building the Nautilus, an advanced submarine that the Company hopes will further tighten its grip on the world’s seaways. However, Nemo foments a rebellion among his fellow prisoners and takes command of the ship, escaping into the depths with his fellow prisoners as his crew. The Mercantile Company is soon in hot pursuit, with a dogged mariner assigned to bring Nemo down; meanwhile, Nemo has an unwilling passenger on board. Will he have his revenge on his captors, or will the Company deep-six his ambitions? The series also stars Georgia Flood, Céline Menville, and Thierry Fremont, with guest appearances from Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor.
Who Is Captain Nemo?
French science fiction pioneer Verne introduced Nemo in 1870’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: there, very little information is given on him, save that he is the merciless and mysterious master of the Nautilus. He plays host and captor to a trio of castaways in the novel, showing them the wonders of the undersea world as he wages a war against the empires of the 19th century. Although Nemo and the Nautilus seemingly meet their end at the end of the novel, both are revealed to have survived in 1875’s The Mysterious Island. There, it is revealed that Nemo (Latin for “no one”) is an alias: Nemo is truly Prince Dakkar, the son of an Indian rajah. Nemo has been played by a variety of actors in both adaptations of Verne’s novels and derivative works, including James Mason, Herbert Lom, Omar Sharif, Michael Caine, Naseeruddin Shah, and Patrick Stewart.
Nautilus had to sail through troubled waters before making its AMC debut. The series was originally set to debut on Disney+, but the streamer scuttled it in 2023. However, AMC salvaged the show in North America, while Prime Video premiered it in the UK last year.
