It’s another heartbreaking day for lovers of television as Peacock has just killed off one of its most promising shows. Laid, a romantic-comedy drama starring Everything Everywhere All At Once star Stephanie Hsu, has been cancelled on the streamer after just one season. The series premiered with all eight episodes on Peacock on December 19. Laid was a hit with audiences and the critics as well, scoring a tidy 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, but the numbers weren’t quite enough for the streamer. In addition to starring, Hsu also served as executive producer, as did the show’s writers and co-showrunners, Sally Bradford McKenna and Nahnatchka Khan.
Peacock has not released an official statement explaining its decision; however, Deadline, which broke the news, reports that the series was unable to draw as much attention as other shows from the same creators. Also, its streaming numbers paled against expectations. Many fans would, however, argue that Laid wasn’t under-watched for a lack of quality. The show needed more visibility and might not have received enough, considering how little was done by way of marketing to push it. If anything, its positive reception from the few who did watch it suggests the show was a hidden gem that was only unlucky not to receive the fanfare it deserved. Perhaps given more time, more people would’ve discovered it, but alas, we’ll never know.
What Is ‘Laid’ About?
The series sees Hsu as Ruby Yao, a young woman who suspects something might be wrong with her after her ex-lovers begin dying under unusual circumstances. She’s right, as she soon discovers a curse is the reason behind the deaths. This sets her on a mission to confront her past, and she goes through her sex timeline to unravel the root cause of the curse. In the finale, Ruby thinks she’s finally defeated the curse and resumes her sexcapades, only to be shocked by the death of her most recent lover. Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger with Ruby’s dad revealing to her that the curse is generational.
The series also starred Zosia Mamet as Ruby’s friend, AJ, Michael Angarano as Richie, her only surviving lover who joins her in her quest to seek answers, as well as Riverdale‘s Tommy Martinez as Isaac. Laid welcomed a number of famous names as guests, including John Early (Search Party), Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live), Olivia Holt (Cruel Summer), Andre Hyland (Guilty Party), Kate Berlant (A League of Their Own), David Denman (Marre of Eastown), pro-wrestler, Ettore “Big E” Ewen, Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Finneas O’Connell (Bad Teacher), and Alexandra Shipp (Barbie).
It’s not yet known if Laid will be shopped to other platforms. All 8 episodes are still available to stream on Peacock.
